Are you ready for an adventure?
Are you eager to learn in a whole different way?
The Walnut Grove EDGE ACADEMY is an experiential learning program operating within WGSS that blends classroom-based activities with out-of-classroom experiences. In some cases, off-campus trips are used to gather information and data that can later be analyzed in the classroom. In other cases, the outdoor setting will become the classroom with readings, lectures, research, journal writing, and other activities done during field trips. In both cases, the outdoor environment provides enhanced opportunities for real-world learning in new and exciting ways.
Students will take the following courses as part of the EDGE program:
- English 11
- P.E. 11
- Social Studies 11
- Math (choose Foundations 11, Pre-Calculus 11, or Pre-Calculus 12)
**NOTE: French immersion students are still eligible to participate in the Edge Academy
These four courses will be scheduled into 'day 1' of the school block cycle (i.e. 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4)
Students will select 4 additional courses for 'day 2' of the block rotation.
Special care has been taken to minimize the amount of class time missed from other subjects. In addition, the school and athletic calendars have been consulted to ensure that EDGE outings avoid all crucial school and athletic events. This will enable the widest possible range of students to consider this program as an option for their grade 11 year.
A typical year in the EDGE ACADEMY will involve many day trips and three extended field trips.
Extended Field Trips
Each year EDGE students participate in three multi-day field trips - one in each term of the school year.
- FALL: 3-day Hiking/Camping Trip (September)
- WINTER: 4-day Winter Activities Camp (January)
- SPRING: 4-day Cycling/Kayaking trip (May)
Day Trips & Activities
In addition to the three extended trips, there will be a number of one day field trips. These will occur during the 'day 1' cycle and will not require missed class time from other school courses.
Examples of typical day trips are...
- Vancouver Aquarium
- Grouse Mountain
- Ropes Course
Involvement in a wilderness education program has a cost factor. EDGE students are required to pay $700. (This fee will be divided into 2 installments spread over the year.) This money will cover the costs of supplies, rentals, transportation, and toll or ferry fees, camp registrations and accommodation expenses. The only additional costs will be for food during the overnight field trips.
It is important that students enrolled in the EDGE ACADEMY have access to the following:
- Comfortable hiking shoes
- Good quality sleeping bag (warm)
- Waterproof outerproof
The EDGE ACADEMY can accommodate a maximum of 75 students.
There will be an information meeting planned early in September for the parents of the students enrolled in the program. If you need any information about the program prior to enrolling, contact any of the four Edge Program teachers.
