Exploring Education in the Outdoor Classroom

Are you ready for an adventure?  Are you eager to learn in a whole different way?
The Walnut Grove EDGE ACADEMY is an integrated studies approach to teaching. The outdoor classroom provides an environment that enhances learning and provides opportunities to understand the curriculum in new and exciting ways.

EDGE is a blend of classroom based activities and out of classroom outings. In many cases, off-campus trips are used to gather information and data that can later be analyzed in the classroom. In other cases, outdoor activity will become the classroom with readings, lectures, research, and journal writing.

Students in this program will be enrolled in the following courses:

  • English 11
  • Biology 11
  • Social Studies 11
  • P.E. 11

(** French immersion students and those that have taken Biology 11in grade 10 are still eligible to participate in the Edge Academy.)

These 4 courses will be scheduled into one day of the school block cycle  (i.e. 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4)
Students will select 4 additional courses for day 2 of the block rotation.

Special care has been taken to minimize the amount of class time missed from other subjects. In addition, the school and athletic calendars have been consulted to ensure that EDGE outings avoid all crucial school and athletic events. This will enable the widest possible range of students to consider this program as an option for their grade 11 year.

Field Trips

A typical year in the EDGE ACADEMY will involve 3 extended field trips

SEPT Fall Trip (1 Day)

Expectations & Costs

Involvement in a wilderness education program has a cost factor. EDGE students are required to pay $700. (This fee will be divided into 2 installments spread over the year.) This money will cover the costs of supplies, rentals, transportation, and toll or ferry fees, camp registrations and accommodation expenses. The only additional costs will be for food during the overnight field trips.

It is important that students enrolled in the EDGE ACADEMY have access to the following:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes
  • GOod quality sleeping bag (warm)
  • Backpack
  • Waterproof outerproof

The EDGE ACADEMY can accommodate a maximum of 75 students.
There will be an information meeting planned early in September for the parents of the students enrolled in the program.  If you need any information about the program prior to enrolling, contact any of the four Edge Program teachers.
